1. What is the EEBD?

An EEBD is a respiratory protective device intended only for escape from a hazardous atmosphere.

DO NOT USE AN EEBD FOR FIREFIGHTING, TANK/VOID ENTRY, OR OTHER WORK IN A HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE. Use the equipment specified by the vessel SMS and the approved procedure.

2. Pre-use / readiness check

☐ Confirm the correct storage location and access.
☐ Check seal/packaging and visible condition.
☐ Check service/inspection status and indicator, if fitted.
☐ Confirm the unit is approved and suitable for the vessel's arrangement.
☐ Know the escape route and muster/assembly point.

3. Escape sequence

Remove the EEBD from its package/cabinet as instructed by the manufacturer.

Activate the breathing system exactly as shown on the onboard unit.

Don the hood/full-face piece correctly and ensure the breathing path is established.

Escape immediately by the designated safe route. Do not stop for non-essential actions.

Report and account for yourself at the designated safe location.
Key rule: The EEBD provides a limited escape duration. Do not delay evacuation to troubleshoot beyond the manufacturer's emergency instructions.

4. Common mistakes

Using an EEBD as an SCBA

Incorrect. EEBDs are escape devices, not firefighting or entry respiratory protection.

Entering a tank or enclosed space

Do not use an EEBD as authorization or protection for entry. Follow enclosed-space entry procedures and use approved equipment.

Ignoring the escape route

Put the device on and move toward a known safe area without unnecessary delay.
